The Mughal-Safavid War
(1648-1653)

FIRST COMMITTEE: THE SAFAVID EMPIRE
Committee Crisis Director:
Rachel Kitto

SECOND COMMITTEE: THE MUGHAL EMPIRE
Committee Crisis Director:
 Matthew Song

For the past ten years, the Safavids have been mourning the loss of their territorial claims over Kandahar—a city filled with memories of the reign of their great Shah Tahmasp. Kandahar was surrendered to the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1638 after a long campaign, and since then, the Safavids have been biding their time had with eyes set on reclaiming what they deem to be rightfully theirs.

Meanwhile, Shah Jahan and the Mughal Empire have recently endured a string of military defeats in their campaign to conquer Uzbek-controlled Badakshan. Having been betrayed by the rulers of Balkh in their 1646 campaign to Kabul and having lost 20 million rupees in the subsequent 1647 campaign against Balkh, the Mughals were already in a position of great weakness and stress. Now, however, with the failure to conquest the Timurid capital and with heavy losses sustained by the Uzbeks, the Mughals must devise plans on retreat and defense. After all, Kandahar was left painfully vulnerable, and rumor has it that Shah Abbas II of the Safavid Empire has just launched an order to reconquer Kandahar…

It’s a battle of the wits to see which empire will lay claim to the ancient city.
